What Is Addiction Treatment?

Addiction treatment is a series of different programs and forms of therapy that are created to help those suffering from addiction become sober. Addiction treatment can be approached in various different ways depending on the circumstances. Nevertheless, there are a few universal concepts that underlie all forms of addiction treatment.

Key Concepts That All Forms of Addiction Treatment Recognize
  • Addiction Is a Disease
  • An Individual Can Develop an Addiction to a Wide Variety of Substances
  • It’s Possible to Achieve Recovery from Any Addiction

How Do Individuals Develop Addictions?

Addiction is characterized by alterations in the brain. These alterations occur due to substance abuse that causes adverse physical, mental, and behavioral effects on an individual. Thus, addiction is a natural physiological response to substance abuse.

People start to abuse substances for many different reasons. For example, many people start to abuse substances to cope with mental illness and the stresses of life.

Others start to abuse substances due to social pressures to do so. Typically, individuals that abuse substances to the point where it causes them to develop addictions don’t realize that they are doing so until it’s too late.

Common Specialized Addiction Treatment Programs

Individuals can develop addictions to a wide variety of substances. For example, while one person may suffer from alcohol addiction, another person may suffer from an addiction to a drug like marijuana or cocaine.

The effects of different substances vary from one another. Therefore, it’s important that addiction treatment programs are specialized and cater to treating the effects of specific types of substances. Below are descriptions of some of the most common addiction treatment programs that are specialized based on substance.

Alcohol Addiction Treatment Programs

Because of how accessible alcohol is, it’s one of the substances that people most often develop an addiction to. Alcohol addiction is characterized by increased alcohol tolerance, the inability to control one’s alcohol intake, and extreme cravings for alcohol.

Prior to attending alcohol addiction treatment, individuals that suffer from alcoholism must attend alcohol detox. Through alcohol detox, recovering alcoholics will gradually rid their bodies of alcohol until they are clean and sober.

More often than not, individuals that detox from alcohol experience severe withdrawal symptoms. Prescription withdrawal medications can help individuals manage their alcohol withdrawal symptoms while going through detox.

After completing alcohol detox, recovering alcoholics should attend professional alcohol addiction treatment in Memphis. Alcohol addiction treatment programs, like ours in Memphis, Tennessee, teach alcoholics about the origins and triggers of their alcohol abuse. In doing so, alcoholics can alter their thoughts, behaviors, and lifestyles. They can do so in a manner that will cause them to not abuse alcohol anymore.

Alcohol addiction treatment also teaches alcoholics about coping mechanisms. Alcoholics can use these coping mechanisms to manage being around some of the people, places, and things that trigger their addictions. The lessons learned in alcohol addiction treatment combined with the self-discovery gained in addiction therapy for alcoholism helps recovering alcoholics achieve sobriety. Heroin Addiction Treatment Programs

Heroin is a particular type of opiate. Typically, heroin users begin to shoot the drug up through their veins. Individuals can also smoke or snort heroin.

Those suffering from heroin addiction most likely need to attend heroin detox prior to attending heroin addiction treatment. During heroin detox, chronic heroin users will completely rid their bodies of heroin. Heroin is highly addictive. As a result, it doesn’t take much to develop a heroin addiction.

Heroin addiction treatment programs provide specialized treatment practices and forms of therapy. These rehab programs also help those that suffer from heroin addiction make the physical, mental, and behavioral lifestyle changes that are necessary to achieve sobriety. Treatment programs even teach recovering heroin addicts coping mechanisms. These coping mechanisms can be used to manage the people, places, and things that trigger their addictions.

Opiate Addiction Treatment Programs

Opiates, or opioids, are drugs that people use to relieve themselves of pain. Most opioids, or opiates, come in the form of prescription medications. The overprescribing of prescription opioid medications as painkillers by doctors is a major reason why opioid addiction rates are so high right now. This is especially the case since opioids are highly addictive, and thus cause people to quickly develop opioid addictions.

Those looking to recover from opioid addiction must attend detox prior to receiving addiction treatment. While in detox, opioid addicts will gradually rid their bodies of opioids. Once recovering opioid addicts are physically clean and sober, they will move onto opioid addiction treatment.

Opioid addiction treatment teaches opioid addicts how to manage the things in life that trigger their addictions. It does this by teaching opioid addicts proper addiction coping mechanisms. Addiction therapy within opioid addiction treatment programs also helps recovering addicts learn more about themselves and why they abuse opioids in the first place. The ultimate goal of opioid addiction treatment programs is to help all patients achieve sobriety.

Benzo Addiction Treatment Programs

Sometimes, people can use benzodiazepines to treat anxiety. In fact, because anxiety is such a common disorder, many people use benzodiazepines just for that. As a result, many people find themselves misusing and abusing benzodiazepines.

To treat benzodiazepine addiction, individuals must attend benzo addiction treatment. Benzo addiction treatment teaches its patients how to cope with the people, places, and things that trigger benzo addiction. Benzo addiction treatment also teaches recovering addicts coping mechanisms that they can use in the real world.

Prior to attending benzo addiction treatment, individuals must attend benzo detox. Benzo detox rids the body of benzodiazepines in a safe and medically supervised environment.

Forms of Addiction Treatment Programs

Here at Grace Land Recovery Center, we offer a wide variety of addiction treatment programs and services. Our addiction programs come in many different forms and are specialized by the substance.

The forms of addiction treatment programs that we offer are differentiated from one another based on their intensity and level of structure. For example, the inpatient forms of addiction treatment in Memphis that we offer are more intense and structured than the outpatient forms of addiction treatment programs that we offer.

In case you’re unaware of what the options are for inpatient and outpatient forms of addiction treatment programs, we’ve described them along with what detox is for you below.

Detox

Typically, addiction recovery begins with medical detoxification. Medical detox is the process of ridding the body of all substances under the supervision and guidance of a professional medical staff.

During the medical detox process, the person in recovery will abstain from using substances. In doing so, the individual will rid his or her body from substances until the individual is technically clean and sober.

To ensure that the medical detox process occurs safely, individuals usually taper their drug use while in detox. By this, we mean that individuals in detox usually slowly decrease the amount of substances that they’re using while in detox until they’re clean of all drugs and sober.

Tapering one’s drug use during detox is safer than quitting cold turkey. This is because tapering drug use while in detox prevents the body from going into shock due to no longer having any of the substances inside of it that it has been relying on to function for an extended period of time. To help individuals that suffer from extreme withdrawal symptoms feel safe and comfortable while in detox, the medical detox staff will provide prescription withdrawal medications to patients through medication-assisted treatment.

Inpatient Treatment

Inpatient treatment is the most intense and structured form of addiction treatment. Therefore, only patients with severe addictions attend inpatient treatment. Inpatient treatment patients cannot maintain their day jobs or their day-to-day responsibilities while receiving care. This is because all inpatient treatment programs require that their patients live in the rehab facilities that they’re receiving treatment at. That way rehab patients can receive 24/7 supervision and guidance. Inpatient treatment programs last around 30 days or longer.

Residential Treatment

Residential inpatient treatment programs are the second most intense and structured programs for addiction treatment. The only form of addiction treatment programs that are more intense and structured than residential inpatient treatment is standard inpatient treatment.

Because residential treatment programs are still inpatient, they too require that patients live in the rehab facilities that they’re receiving treatment at. This also means that residential treatment program patients also receive 24/7 supervision and guidance. Residential treatment programs even tend to last 30 days or longer like standard inpatient programs do.

The only real difference between residential inpatient treatment and standard inpatient treatment is that residential treatment is more casual and less structured in nature. Therefore, residential treatment patients have more alone time to participate in holistic treatments and recreational activities.

Because residential treatment programs still require that their patients live at their rehab facilities during treatment and receive 24/7 supervision and care, only patients with severe addictions should still attend this type of inpatient program. Whether an individual should attend standard inpatient treatment or residential inpatient treatment just depends on how severe that person’s addiction is.

If that person’s addiction is extremely severe, he or she should attend the most intensive form of inpatient treatment. This is standard inpatient treatment. If an individual’s addiction is severe but not at extreme levels then that person can likely just attend residential treatment.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Partial hospitalization program (PHP) treatment is the most structured form of outpatient treatment. This is because although PHP allows its patients to leave their rehab facilities and go home once treatment is over each day, PHP treatment is still intense and structured and lasts all day long.

In fact, PHP treatment lasts around five to eight hours a day, five to seven days a week. Because PHP treatment lasts all day long, its patients still cannot maintain a day job or all of their day-to-day responsibilities.

Another term for PHP treatment is day treatment, due to the fact that it lasts all day long. People whose addictions are moderate to severe, but are stable enough to not need full-on inpatient or residential treatment should attend PHP treatment.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Intensive outpatient program (IOP) treatment is the second most intense form of outpatient treatment. In this form of outpatient treatment, patients receive intensive and structured treatment within a few hours a day, a few days a week.

When not receiving treatment, IOP treatment patients can go home and tend to their day-to-day jobs and responsibilities. People with moderate addictions should attend intensive outpatient program treatment.

Outpatient Treatment

Standard outpatient treatment is the least intensive form of all the outpatient treatment programs. This is because outpatient treatment only requires that patients attend addiction treatment a couple of hours a day, once or twice a week. When not receiving treatment, outpatient addiction treatment program patients can also go home and tend to their day jobs and day-to-day responsibilities.

Because outpatient treatment program patients spend so much time at home and so little time in treatment each week, only people with mild addictions should attend outpatient addiction treatment programs.
