Alcohol Addiction

Addiction is a chronic disorder that causes chemical changes to the brain. As a result, addiction makes individuals continue abusing substances. One of the most popular substances that people develop an addiction to is alcohol. If you suffer from alcohol addiction, it’s important for you to attend professional alcohol rehab so that you know how to beat alcoholism and how to help an alcoholic.

Tennessee residents who are suffering from alcohol addictions should seek out alcohol rehab in the state of Tennessee in an addiction treatment center. Thankfully, we offer such services here at Grace Land Recovery.

What is Alcohol Addiction?

Alcohol addiction is a disorder that’s caused by chronic alcohol abuse. Chronic alcohol abuse causes changes to a person’s brain chemistry. These changes cause individuals to begin depending on alcohol in order to function “normally”. This, in turn, causes people to be willing to do anything to continue drinking alcohol.

Research indicates that everything from socioeconomic status to race, sex, and genetics can predispose a person to alcoholism. Psychological and behavioral health factors may also subject an individual to alcohol addiction.

Causes of Alcohol Addiction

Various risk factors may propel you to start abusing alcohol. Such substance abuse risk factors include:

  • Binge drinking
  • Having a parent that suffers from alcohol addiction
  • Mental health disorders such as schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression
  • More than 15 and 12 drinks weekly for males and females, respectively

In some cases, mental health issues such as stress, low self-esteem, and peer pressure can even cause a person to start abusing alcohol. Recognizing the early signs of alcoholism is often a challenge. This is because of how common it is in many cultures to consume large amounts of alcohol when socializing. As a result, figuring out how to beat alcoholism and how to help an alcoholic also becomes challenging.

Some signs and symptoms of alcohol addiction include:

  • Irritability
  • Hiding alcohol
  • Poor memory
  • Poor coordination
  • Constant drunkenness
  • Poor personal hygiene
  • Poor anger management
  • Troubles at work or school
  • Drinking alcohol at odd times and places
  • Strained relationships with others due to alcohol use
  • Increased frequency and quantity of alcohol consumption
  • Lack of interest in things that one was formerly interested in
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not consuming alcohol

When you start to notice these signs and symptoms of alcohol addiction, it may be time to develop alcoholism treatment plans and seek out rehab for alcoholism. Otherwise, overcoming alcoholism will become more and more difficult.

Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms

One clear sign that someone is on the way to developing an alcohol addiction is dependency. Alcohol dependence is marked by the experience of withdrawal symptoms anytime that a person minimizes or discontinues drinking alcohol. For example, people that suffer from alcohol dependency will feel tired, anxious, and nauseous whenever they minimize or discontinue drinking.

Upon termination of alcohol intake, withdrawal symptoms may last from six hours to days. Common alcohol withdrawal symptoms include increased blood pressure, nightmares, tremors, irritability, sweating, and insomnia.

Note that there are mild alcohol withdrawal symptoms that can continue for weeks. Delirium tremens are among the most severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms. People that suffer from delirium tremens experience tactile hallucination, seizures, extreme agitation, and hallucinations.

The Effects of Alcohol on Your Brain and Body

Alcoholism may lead to loss of coordination and memory. Prolonged consumption of alcohol will interfere with the cerebral cortex, limbic system, and cerebellum. The result is an impaired signaling pathway in the brain.

Due to the negative effects that chronic alcohol abuse causes to the brain, it becomes more and more difficult to figure out how to beat alcoholism or how to help an alcoholic the longer the period of time that a person has been abusing alcohol. The more the amount of alcohol that a person abuses also makes overcoming alcoholism difficult.

Chronic alcoholism can cause a person to develop pancreatic cancer, hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, fibrosis, stroke, and cardiomyopathy in the cardiovascular system. It is best for those who suffer from alcoholism to seek professional help right away. Luckily, one can learn how to beat alcoholism for good through alcohol rehab.

Inpatient vs. Outpatient Alcohol Treatment in Tennessee

It’s nearly impossible to overcome an addiction without attending treatment for drug addiction at a rehab center. One premier rehab center that offers top-notch alcohol and drug rehab treatment is Grace Land Recovery.

Treatment at Our Tennesse Alcohol Rehab Center

Grace Land Recovery is located near Memphis, Tennessee. ]Alcohol and drug treatment centers in Tennessee such as Grace Land Recovery help addicts learn coping mechanisms that will help them be able to achieve sobriety.

There are usually various forms of alcohol treatment plans for various types of alcoholics at alcohol and drug treatment centers in Tennessee like Grace Land Recovery. For example, people with very severe alcohol and drug addictions can attend inpatient treatment at rehab centers in Tennessee.

Inpatient Treatment

Inpatient treatment programs require their patients to live in alcohol and drug rehab facilities 24/7 while attending drug rehab though. This leaves no time to work or take care of any of your normal life responsibilities.

PHP and Outpatient Treatment

A great alternative to inpatient treatment is partial hospitalization program treatment. Partial hospitalization program (PHP) treatment is an outpatient form of drug rehab for individuals with moderate to severe addictions.

PHP treatment requires its patients to attend alcohol and drug rehab for approximately five to eight hours a day, five to seven days a week. One benefit of an outpatient form of rehab such as PHP treatment though is that it allows its patients to go back and spend their nights and any other times that the patients aren’t receiving treatment in the comfort of their own homes. This means that individuals who take part in outpatient alcohol treatment can tend to their normal life responsibilities while simultaneously attending alcohol rehab in Tennessee.

We here at Grace Land Recovery understand that people are trying to learn how to beat alcoholism and how to help an alcoholic still have lives of their own. That’s why our Tennessee alcohol rehab center specializes in providing outpatient forms of substance abuse treatment.

This means that all of our patients have the ability to receive the level of care that they need to overcome their substance abuse while still being able to spend their nights and extra time in the comfort of their own homes. This also means that our rehab patients can still tend to their normal life responsibilities while receiving care at our Tennessee alcohol rehab center.

Treatment Plans for Overcoming Alcoholism at Grace Land Recovery

Here at Grace Land Recovery Center, professional rehab specialists develop specialized and individualized treatment plans for patients based on their individual needs. Our treatment plans are comprehensive and can work to assist you on your unique journey to overcoming alcoholism.

Prior to attending treatment for alcoholism, our physicians will ensure that you receive a physical to detect if you suffer from any physical issues such as liver failure due to your addiction. Prior to attending alcohol rehab in Tennessee, you should also receive a mental health assessment to detect if you suffer from a co-occurring disorder.

Here at Grace Land Recovery Center, we offer various alcohol and drug abuse treatments with various different approaches. For effective recovery and to minimize the chances of relapse, we here at Grace Land also provide an individualized combination of these approaches to our patients.

Not all drug abuse treatment methods are useful for every patient. The standard treatment plan for substance addiction involves a blend of outpatient and inpatient rehab programs, medication, individual and group therapies, and counseling.

More often than not, an individual will need to attend detox prior to attending rehab if he or she wants to learn how to beat alcoholism. This is definitely the case when attending alcohol rehab at our Tennessee facility.

Detox is the process of ridding the body of all substances. When detoxing from substances, it’s best to taper one’s substance use. By “taper,” we mean gradually lessen the number of substances that you’re consuming until you achieve sobriety. The purpose of tapering one’s drug use is to avoid shocking your body while detoxing.

People that are detoxing from alcohol will likely experience severe withdrawal symptoms. If your withdrawal symptoms are severe during alcohol detox, the medical staff at the professional detox facility that you’re at will provide you with appropriate prescription withdrawal medications. Detoxification is usually the first step in treating substances of abuse at alcohol and drug treatment centers in Tennessee.

Outpatient Alcohol Treatment

Outpatient alcohol treatment can vary greatly in the amount of time and dedication that it requires. Most outpatient alcohol rehab programs last for around a few weeks. As we mentioned earlier, partial hospitalization program (PHP) treatment is a form of outpatient alcohol treatment that requires that patients attend rehab for around five to eight hours a day, five to seven days a week.

Another form of outpatient alcohol treatment that’s offered at Grace Land Recovery is intensive outpatient program (IOP) treatment. IOP treatment requires that patients attend rehab for at least a few hours a day, a few days a week. Finally, standard outpatient program (OP) treatment requires that patients attend rehab for approximately a couple of hours a day, once or twice a week.

The more time that an outpatient rehab program requires its patients to receive treatment for their substance addictions the more intense the rehab program is. Thus, the various types of outpatient alcohol rehab programs offered at Grace Land Recovery cater to different types of alcoholics.

For example, people that suffer from moderate to severe alcoholism that want to attend an outpatient form of treatment should attend PHP treatment. This is because PHP treatment is the most intense version of outpatient rehab since it requires its patients to essentially receive treatment all day.

IOP treatment is the second, or middle, most intensive form of outpatient alcohol treatment. So, the types of alcoholics who would benefit most from IOP treatment are those with moderate-level addictions and funds.

The third final form of outpatient alcohol treatment is that of OP treatment. Since outpatient treatment only requires patients to attend rehab once or twice a week, the types of alcoholics who could benefit from outpatient treatment includes individuals with mild alcohol addictions.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Grace Land Recovery is a dual diagnosis treatment center. Thus, we here at Grace Land not only treat alcohol and drug addiction, but we also treat their co-occurring disorders. Because mental illnesses are often co-occurring with drug addiction, many individuals that receive treatment at Grace Land Recovery receive co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder treatment. Co-occurring treatment for mental health and substance use disorders must occur simultaneously.

Mental Health Therapy for Addiction

One of the most important parts of any substance use treatment plan is the different forms of therapies. Long-term substance use treatment therapies are highly effective in treating addiction. Whether short-term or long-term, the forms of therapy that you’ll likely receive when in alcohol rehab Tennessee include individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy.

There are various different types of therapy that therapists can use within each of these forms of addiction therapy. For example, cognitive behavioral therapy is a very popular type of addiction therapy that can be used in the individual, group, or family therapy format.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is the therapeutic practice of changing one’s negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors into positive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. That way, one will be more inclined to practice positive behaviors when thinking or feeling something that triggers his or her desire to use substances. Here at Grace Land Recovery Center, we incorporate various forms and types of addiction therapy within our treatment plans.
