What Are Commonly Abused Substances?

Addiction can occur in people who are abusing both legal as well as illegal substances. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) offers a list of some of the drugs most commonly abused nationwide.

These include:

Examples of drugs on this list that are legal include alcohol, prescription medications, and marijuana in some states. Examples of illicit drugs on this list include substances like methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, Psilocybin, and PCP.

What Are the Causes of Drug Addiction?

Developing an addiction to any given substance is a lot easier than you think. Many of our patients even reported that they felt like they were addicted to a substance since their very first use. This is because of the chemicals in the human brain that addiction changes.

Below, we have outlined some of the many factors involved in substance abuse and addiction:

  • Genetic Predisposition: One factor that can induce addiction in a person is their genetic history. In fact, many people are predisposed to developing addiction due to the fact that their parent or grandparent is an alcoholic or drug addict. Thus, individuals with a genetic predisposition to developing an addiction will struggle with drug use more frequently than those who don’t have a genetic predisposition to developing an addiction.
  • Environment: Another factor that can contribute to whether or not a person develops an addiction is a person’s environment. For example, if a person constantly attends parties or events in which people abuse drugs, that person is going to be desensitized to drug use. Before that person knows it, he or she will likely start abusing substances.Seeing people in your household drink or use drugs on a daily basis will also increase your chances of becoming a drug addict. This is because this, too, desensitizes you to drug addiction.
  • Peer Pressure: Peer pressure can also act as a cause for drug addiction treatment. This is especially the case when people are teenagers and at a point in life in which their friends have a greater impact on their decision-making than their parents.
  • Mental Illness: Mental illness is also a huge reason why many people start abusing substances to the point of developing an addiction. This is because many people that suffer from mental illness use drugs to cope with their negative thoughts and emotions. Oftentimes, people will even use drugs to help them forget about their thoughts and feelings.
  • Drug Dependency: Some people develop an addiction to substances because they already suffer from drug dependency. People that suffer from drug dependency experience withdrawal symptoms anytime they minimize or discontinue their use of substances. Thus, many people continue to abuse substances so that they can avoid feeling the withdrawal symptoms that they would otherwise feel if they were to stop abusing substances. This continued abuse of substances after a person already suffers from a drug dependency can cause a person to develop a full-fledged addiction. Once a person develops an addiction, he or she must attend addiction rehab to overcome it.

Medical Detox for Drug Addiction in Memphis

Detoxification is an important step in the safe recovery from drug abuse and addiction. The best form of detox is medical detox. This is because medical detox provides physicians and a medical staff that supervises your drug detox from beginning to end. Without supervision, detox can be dangerous, as it may lead to many negative physical and mental effects.

Medical detox also provides patients with the opportunity to receive prescription medications. These prescription medications help patients manage their withdrawal symptoms if they ever become too severe.

How We Treat Drug Addiction in Memphis

Drug addiction rehab usually comes in the form of a drug addiction treatment program. The cornerstone of these programs is therapy, including both individual and group therapy.

There are various different types of drug addiction treatment programs. These types vary based on the intensity of the program. For example, inpatient drug addiction treatment programs are more intense and structured than outpatient drug addiction treatment programs.

Inpatient Addiction Treatment

Inpatient addiction treatment programs require that patients live in the addiction rehab facilities that they’re receiving treatment at. There are two forms of inpatient addiction treatment:

Standard Inpatient Treatment

Standard inpatient addiction treatment programs supervise and monitor their patients 24/7. This is because the patients that attend inpatient forms of addiction treatment have severe addictions and thus need constant supervision and monitoring to remain sober while in addiction rehab. Standard inpatient addiction treatment usually lasts anywhere from 30 days to a year. Most standard inpatient forms of treatment advise that patients receive treatment for at least 90 days though.

Residential Treatment

Residential addiction treatment is similar to standard inpatient treatment except it is more casual. Residential treatment patients have more alone time to participate in recreational activities and holistic forms of treatment. Although residential treatment is more casual than standard inpatient treatment, it still provides its patients with 24/7 supervision and monitoring. This is because patients who attend residential treatment still suffer from severe addictions. Also similar to standard inpatient treatment, residential treatment lasts anywhere from 30 days to a year. Residential treatment also requires that patients live at the addiction rehab facilities that they’re receiving treatment at.

Outpatient Addiction Treatment

For patients whose addictions aren’t severe enough to necessarily need inpatient treatment, there is outpatient treatment. The key difference between inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment is that outpatient treatment doesn’t require patients to live at the addiction rehab facilities that they’re receiving treatment at. Instead, outpatient treatment patients get to go back home in between treatment sessions.

There are a few forms of outpatient addiction treatment:

  • Partial Hospitilzation Program: The most intense form of outpatient addiction treatment is partial hospitalization program treatment. Partial hospitalization program treatment requires patients to attend addiction rehab five to eight hours a day, five to seven days a week.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program: The second most intense form of outpatient addiction treatment is intensive outpatient program treatment. Intensive outpatient program treatment requires that patients attend addiction rehab for at least a few hours a day, a few days a week.
  • Standard Outpatient: The least intensive form of outpatient addiction treatment is standard outpatient treatment. Standard outpatient treatment requires its patients to attend addiction rehab a couple of hours a day, once or twice a week.

Holistic Dug Addiction Treatment

People that want to receive a more alternative and natural form of drug rehab can attend holistic addiction treatment programs. Holistic addiction treatment programs don’t offer medication-assisted treatment, medical forms of detox, or even traditional forms of addiction therapy. Instead, holistic treatment uses alternative addiction treatment and therapy practices to help patients stop using substances.

Holistic treatment also uses alternative forms of addiction treatment and therapy to help patients manage withdrawal symptoms and cope with addiction triggers. Examples of popular holistic addiction treatment methods include acupuncture, massage therapy, equine therapy, art and music therapy, yoga, and meditation, and exercise.
